Meet your NACCU Volunteers: Jarvis Dean

Your NACCU Volunteers,
Meet your NACCU Volunteers:
Jarvis Dean

This is the latest installment of the NACCU series highlighting our association volunteers. NACCU provides programs and services to our members, many which would not be possible without the dedication and commitment of our volunteer leaders. Volunteers, whether they are a committee member, a Board member, or an onsite volunteer at a conference, are all important in making NACCU volunteer-driven programs an exceptional experience for our card industry peers.

Campus Card Information

Name: Jarvis Dean

School: Sheridan College, Hazel McCallion Campus

Volunteer Role: NACCU Ambassadors

What is your role at your institution?

I work for Sheridan College, and my role at the college is onecard Officer. Aside from handling financials for the card office, I act as a financial liaison between internal and external vendors to ensure the correct execution of all operations. I supervise our part-time student team members (currently 22 for 2024-25 academic year), including hiring, training, scheduling, and payroll. I am responsible for overseeing day-to-day operations and implementing/assuring a high level student experience across three campuses.

When did you join NACCU?

I joined NACCU in May 2019 and attended my very first Canadian conference at Carleton University that year.

What do you like about volunteering with NACCU?

What I like about volunteering with NACCU is that it allows me to step out of my comfort zone and learn more about the card office at other institutions and sharpen my skills. Also, it gives me the opportunity to assist others who are new to the campus card industry.

If you could hang out with any cartoon character, who would you choose and why?

One cartoon character I would like to hang out with would be Wolverine from the X-Men. Two skills of his I would like to ask him about would be his Superhuman Reflexes as it relates to how he performs incredible feats of athleticism, and his Regenerative Healing Factor, which enables him to heal much faster than the average human.

If you had to delete all but three apps from your smartphone, which ones would you keep?

The three apps I would like to keep on my smartphone would be the Sportsnet app for my love of sports (Go Leafs Go). The second would be the Kijiji app as I sell shoes, baseball hats, and sports gear as a side hustle. The third app I'd keep on my phone would be the TouchNet 360u app as I need this app for my daily work operations, and I may forget my plastic onecard at home but would not leave my home without my phone.

What skill do you think everyone should have?

One skill I believe everyone must have is the ability to listen. Every person should be quick to hear, and slow to speak.

If you could meet any living person for dinner, who would you pick and why?

Apart from spending time with my brothers as they live far away from me, one famous person I would like to have dinner with is Franklin Graham. He regularly speaks out on current moral and social issues, and calls Christians to stand for Biblical values. I look up to him for being a model human and would seek his mentorship.
