"Novelty" Student IDs: Discussion on the NACCU Listserv

A discussion is in progress on the NACCU listserv regarding the website, which offers “novelty” driver’s licenses and student IDs from many colleges and universities.

This discussion has evolved into how schools can take measures to best protect themselves from the threat of fake ID cards.

“We have reported this through to our Protective Services folks which includes our Chief Information Security Officer,” said John Younk from the University of Alberta. “This department did a check on everything including ordering a novelty card for review. They deemed the risk to be fairly low given the quality of the card but they did determine that an actual student ID number was being used so they issued a warning to IDViking that this was potentially an issue that the University would take action against. They promptly removed the number. One thing that our ONEcard folks did this year was add a foil holographic image to the card which is a little harder to replicate and does a pretty good job of differentiating a legitimate card from a "novelty" card. Bottom line - we cannot stop sites like this from issuing novelty IDs but we should take reasonable steps to protect the integrity of our cards and our program.”
